Episode 8 | feat. Amy Carney, author, “Parent on Purpose”
Pulling your kids out of all activities and school and traveling cross-country for 6 months may not be your family’s story, but it IS Amy’s and the wisdom she gained and wrote about in her quick and easy-to-read “Parent on Purpose” book is something we all need to know.
What if we look at the seasons of parenthood as three phases: Love, Lead, Launch. Does that change how you view parenting? Each season is critical to producing fruits we want to grow in our children and in our families.
Highlights from our conversation:
Are you taking time to visualize the end? The end is the “Launch” after high school into adulthood and it comes 936 weeks after we receive our child.
Does it feel overwhelming to make all the moments happen? It’s okay. It doesn’t take that much time or effort to invest in our kids. We just have to be intentional. Find what you all enjoy doing. Schedule that thing and make it happen. You CAN parent on purpose even in the SMALL moments.
What are your family values? Amy offers a list of 96, and encourages us to choose 6 that are important to us and focus on those. It’s realistic and helps you to keep what’s important to your family at the center of the decisions you all make.
“We must parent and live our lives from the end. Not only must we look toward our child’s high school graduation and parent toward that vision, but even more importantly, we must visualize our deathbed and make choices about today with the end in mind.” ~Amy Carney Parent on Purpose
